What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making your business the answer AI tools give when someone asks about your industry. When a customer asks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews who does what you do, GEO is what decides whether your name comes up or a competitor's does. It is the AI era's version of ranking first.

What GEO actually means

For two decades, getting found online meant ranking in a list of blue links. People now increasingly ask an AI a question and get a single written answer, often without clicking anything. GEO is the practice of becoming the business that answer names.

It rests on two questions. Can the AI cleanly read and understand your site? And do enough trusted sources vouch for you that the AI is confident naming you? Get both right and you become the answer. Get them wrong and you are invisible to a growing share of buyers.

Why GEO matters now

AI answers are taking the place of the first click. The searches that used to land on your homepage increasingly resolve inside an AI response, so the businesses that get named in that response capture the attention that used to go to page one.

This is still early. Most businesses, including most agencies that sell this exact service, have done none of the basic work that makes a site readable to AI. That gap is the opportunity for the businesses that move first.

The two things that decide whether AI names you

First, readability. Your pages have to be built so AI can understand who you are, what you sell, and where. That means structured data, AI-crawler access, a plain-text source of truth, and clear answers to the questions people actually ask.

Second, authority. AI cites businesses that already rank and that other trusted sites point to. You earn that over time with real pages and real references, not tricks.

How to start with GEO

Begin with a read of how AI sees you today, then fix the readability basics: a source-of-truth file at your domain root, structured data on every page, explicit access for AI crawlers, plain-text page versions, and a homepage that answers real questions.

From there, build the authority signals that make AI trust you, and re-measure on a regular cycle so you can watch your visibility move. The work compounds.

Common questions

Answered.

Is GEO the same as SEO?

They overlap and good GEO still rests on solid SEO, but they are not the same. SEO competes for a list of links; GEO competes for the single answer an AI gives. See our GEO vs SEO guide for the full comparison.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

Close. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is another name for the same goal, getting named in the answer rather than the list. Some people say GEO, some say AEO. The work is largely the same.

How long does GEO take to show results?

Faster than classic SEO but not instant. Readability fixes can land in days, while AI citations build over the following weeks as your authority grows. Most programs re-measure every 90 days.

Do I still need SEO if I do GEO?

Yes. AI tools heavily cite pages that already rank in search, so strong SEO is part of the foundation GEO builds on. You optimize for both, AI first.
